The Atlantikwall was an extensive system of coastal fortifications built by Nazi Germany between 1942 and 1944 along the western coast of Europe as a defense against an anticipated Allied invasion of the mainland continent from Great Britain. Thousands of forced laborers were impressed to construct these permanent fortifications along the Dutch, Belgian and French coasts facing the English Channel.

The Mazda 787 and its derivative 787B were Group C sports prototype racing cars built by Mazda for use in the World Sportscar Championship, All Japan Sports Prototype Championship, as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1990 to 1991. Designed to combine a mixture of the Fédération Internationale du Sport Automobile (FISA) Group C regulations with the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) GTP regulations, the 787s were the last Wankel rotary-powered racing cars to compete in the World and Japanese championships, using Mazda's R26B engine.
Although the 787 and 787B lacked the single lap pace of World Championship competitors such as Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, and Porsche, as well Japanese Championship competitors Nissan and Toyota, the Mazdas had reliability which allowed them to contend for their respective championships. The reliability of the cars eventually paid off in 1991 when a 787B driven by Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler, and Bertrand Gachot went on to victory in the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans. This remains as of 2011 the only victory by a Japanese marque as well as the only victory by a car not using a reciprocating engine design.

Sometimes LA can weigh on your spirit.

Nils had a gig at the Roosevelt Hotel.

Which is haunted by the ghost of Marilyn Monroe, by the way.

We both agreed that the trees in LA are lacking.

So, the very next morning we got in the car and headed north.. to the hills. This picture was taken in Bakersfield, along the way. Bakersfield is a strange place.

After a short hike...

We found some serious trees.

It was Billie's first real experience with nature. (besides the beach)

It was funny to see her instincts come alive as she was bounding through the brambles.

She really liked it.

Kodak Professional T-MAX Film is a continuous tone, panchromatic, tabular-grain black and white negative film made by Eastman Kodak. It is sold in three speeds: 100, 400 and 3200. The 100 and 400 speeds are given as ISO numbers, but the 3200 is sold as a multi-speed film.
The 3200 speed is actually nominally 800 speed. It has uses in surveillance and other work where it can be given a pushed exposure index between 1600 and 25000. I pushed it to 1600 for this series.

LA vs war

I hung my camera out the window on my drive home from work.

LA didn't seem that into war.

Well, maybe a little turf war.

We went to east LA.

This lady had her baby involved in her strange performance art. The kid was not feeling it...it was borderline child abuse.

Our friend Kelly did some curating at the LA vs War art show, so we went to check it out.
